Hopes Diary.
Hope was someone who saw the world in a different way. She thought about all the positive things in life rather than the negative. This book she is always writing in her diary, when she found out about her dad she was sad that she might never see him again. When she is writing in her diary she is giving me a good explanation of what it was like back then and what it was like to have someone fighting in the war and thinking you might never see them again, this book makes me feel as though I am with her right there and it also makes me think, what if my life was like that? In the book Five Smooth Stones by Kristiana Gregory Hope is a girl who writes her whole life in her diary, when she finds out her dad is at war she thinks he will never come back. She starts to struggle in school a little bit, she hates to go, and this is bad because she has to go to school to get a education.
Hopes life isn't the best, her dad is at war, she hates to go to school, and she only has one friend. In 1776 school was nothing like it is now, when you talked when the teacher was talking you got hit with a ruler in the hands, "No obey!" when this happened you couldn’t speak up for yourself. Or when you did one thing wrong you had to sit in the corner and wear the "dunce" hat, this doesn’t sound bad but back then this was a very bad thing, kids laughed at you, you got teased for a long time!
Back then it was bad to talk out, but now days when kids talk out what do they get? Nothing kids can talk out and just get laughed at about it. I think that as the world becomes more advanced kids think that they get more freedom, at school and sometimes even at home. This isn’t the only thing that has changed, the way people talk has also changed a lot. Back in the 1700’s people were so proper, "Methinks of my brother Ethan every hour," the way they talk is the way they write and vice versa. Also everyone is so negative now days, back then they always talked happy and when they were sad they seemed happy.
The war was a big thing then and now, then you had to always worry about a place to stay, where to get food, and sometime where it is safe to sleep, and when they did find somewhere to sleep they appreciated it, unlike now people take advantage of what they have now. Hopes family was lucky because they had a home and some food, she really doesn’t have to worry about anyone coming to get them because her dad is in the war to protect there city.
Towards the end Hopes dad writes her a letter, she is so happy because she knows that he is alive. Now days all they have to do is call. This shows just how much times have changed. This world will continue to grow more advanced so right now in this time; we should appreciate everything we own, our family, and house. Or even be lucky to be living in a safe environment.
