The Neverending Story.
As Bastian is running from the bullies that just threw him into a trash can, he stops into a nearby book store to hide.
"What are you doing here young man, I don’t like children, get out." Says the man at the desk.
"But I was…." Tries to explain Bastian
"You don’t even read get out of here." Says the man
"Yes I do, I have read many books! Treasure Island, Tom Sawyer! Lots of books, what is that book your reading?" Says Bastian
"Nothing like the books you have read." The man says.
When he said that, Bastian became more interested in this book that the man is reading.
Bastian took the book when the old man is gone, when he had the book he runs somewhere the old man couldn’t find him and he starts to read his book, only does he know that he is the one controlling the book with his imagination.
The movie the never-ending story follows the Romance mode of literature. First it starts off with mild conflict when Bastian gets thrown into a garbage can by bullies from school. This is a mild conflict because Bastian is scared to stick up for himself and he can’t do anything about it. Next in the romance mode of literature is mild conflict again, this is when Bastian gets a book from a book store that he only thinks he’s reading but he is controlling Atrayu the main character in the book. The world that Atrayu is in is ending because of the “nothing.” The nothing is a very powerful source that is ending the world of fantasia. When Atrayu starts his journey to defeat the nothing many small conflicts arise, first off when he is walking though the swamps his house starts sinking because he let sadness get the best of him. The next small conflict is when he comes across the turtle and the turtle is not confident in him at all! He is a very sad turtle that doesn’t help Atrayu. One of the biggest conflicts is when he is flying on his dragon then they met the nothing and it starts using its power to end the world, when all of a sudden the dragon and Atrayu separate. At the end of the Romance mode of literature is new beginning, for this movie/story the new beginning is when Atrayu brings Bastian into the story so that he can save that world. When he meets up with the empress he is given a grain of sand to make a wish on, Bastian wishes and everything is saved. At the end his dragon flies him in the real world and chases the bullies right into the trash can. This shows new beginning because Bastian will no longer get bullied but he might be the most powerful thing in his town. Also it shows new beginning for fantasia.
In this movie imagination plays a big part in this movie without imagination fantasia would be dying, just like it was in the movie. But the “nothing” was the lack of imagination. This movie was showing people what would happen without imagination, without imagination everyone and everything would be the same, no one would have uniqueness. Just like in fantasia everyone was sad, and boring none of them had imagination. Bastian had to have imagination to remember his mom. When he reads this book I think he remembers that imagination is important. While he is reading this book he has to have imagination to be a part of Atrayu, if he doesn’t Fantasia will not exist.
This movie demonstrates good use of imagination. It shows what life would be like without imagination. Bastion grew in imagination more as he went on reading the story. This movie was a good movie and it really made me think about what life would be like if no one had imagination.
